Modern Digital Printing

Digital printing provides vibrant and limitless full-colour designs ideal for small to medium runs without the need for bespoke screen meshes. Utilizing 4 base ceramic colours (CMYK), your intricate designs can be mapped and matched, then traditional kiln-fired for extreme durability and commercial dishwasher safety.

Digital Printing Example

Benefits

  • Designs are printed in colours close to the original design.
  • No limit to the number of colours.
  • Faster turnaround times than screen printing.
  • No filmwork or screens are required, saving time and cost.
  • Ceramic items are completely kiln fired.
  • Extremely durable and commercial dishwasher safe.
  • Transfers can be applied to a wide range of ceramic items and can be stretched.
  • Smaller quantities can be produced.

Constraints

  • Cost is dependant on the size of the design, not on the number of colours.
  • Some colours cannot be mixed using CMYK (must use screen printing).
  • Reds and pinks cannot be printed on the same design (Magenta limits).
  • Metallic colours cannot be printed digitally.

The Process

Digital printing is a method of printing similar to an inkjet printer but using ceramic colour rather than inks. All the colours are printed from 4 base colours CMYK (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black) and then mixed together to create the required colours.

Your design is printed on one layer and then a covercoat is applied to the sheet, the resultant sheet is dried and the water slide transfers are cut and applied to the ceramic item.
